AI’s impact on Stack Overflow usage
Our analysis
AI has fundamentally changed Stack Overflow's role as a resource for answers. 64% visit less for simple questions, 29% ask fewer questions, and 27% contribute less. Only 1.2% contribute more. However, 16% now visit more specifically for verification — meaning SO is shifting from "ask" to "verify." A small segment (6%) visit more because AI-generated answers lead them to SO for source attribution.
